Friends and I came up with a variation on a kamikaze karaoke thing this weekend. It worked pretty well--other people at the bar ended up joining in and playing.

We took an app (specifically, Decision Roulette, but I imagine there are other options out there) and made two wheels: one for the "type of song" (various categories like decades, duets, genres, or odd ones like "a song you hate" or "songs with a color in the title") and the other had whether the vocalist was male or female.

Participation was fun: I got '60s female and '70s female, so that lead to "Son of a Preacher Man" and "Heart of Glass;" the host (another middle aged guy) ended up doing "It's My Party and I'll Cry if I Want To."

It had a good low barrier of entry--instead of forcing a specific song, it got people thinking outside their normal box of songs they sing.

we do something similar, Wheeldecide is the site i used. we put up all kinds of theme ideas and people have to think of song titles or artist names that fit.
transportation (The Cars, Last Train To Clarksville, Horse With No Name, REO Speedwagon)
colors (Simply Red, Blue October, Yellow Ledbeter, Green Grass and High Tides)
animals (Flock of Seagulls, The Penguins, Bulls On Parade, I Am The Walrus)
anatomy (Heartbreaker, (I Just) Died in Your Arms, Badfinger, Babyface)
places (Chicago, Midnight Train To Georgia, Berlin, 22 Acacia Avenu)
dead artists (James Brown, Motorhead, Lynyrd Skynyrd, 2pac)
they went solo (Ozzy, Phil Collins, Diana Ross, Beyonce)
covers (Cocaine, Sweet Dreams (are made of this), Cum On Feel The Noize, Killing Me Softly)

Oooh. I'm stealing some of those categories to add to ours. Thanks!

I wouldn't put Skynyrd in the dead artists since what's left of the original band and Ronnies brother Johnny as singer are still alive and well and touring.

The original, real Skynyrd is dead, and has been for a long time. Really, only the name exists to the true, original fans.

Much as I love Gary Rossington and Dale Krantz (who still tour with what is LS now), it's just not the same.

Rossington Collins was amazing. Probably the best thing to come out of Skynyrd, but sadly, Allen Collins is gone, too. Opinions may differ on this, but their debut album was released at an important time in my life. Very close to my heart.
