It was written in 1973 by Stephen Sondheim for the musical “A Little Night Music”. Three nights before opening night he realized that the leading lady did not have a song of her own. He wrote this in one night and it became the most memorable song of the musical. Originally made popular by Judy Collins, this is the Frank Sinatra version. Historically, in the circus when disaster strikes, the clowns are sent in to distract the audiance thus the title "Send in the Clowns." Hope it is not to depressing. It's a sad, beautiful song.
